B2B marketing helps buyers at target accounts discover your product or service, evaluate whether it fits their needs, and move toward an inquiry or sales conversation. Because end users, implementation leads, security teams, and budget owners may all influence the decision, your marketing must support each stakeholder and connect cleanly with the sales process.

### If you’re unsure where to start

Choose the row that most closely matches your current metrics or sales challenges and pick one tactic to start with. If multiple rows apply, start from the stage where the customer’s evaluation most frequently stalls.

| Current situation | First guide to read |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------- |
| You lack a clear view of competitor changes or which improvements to prioritize | [Research competitors](/playbooks/b2b/research-competitors) |
| The value and implementation requirements of your product/service aren’t communicated effectively on your website | [Build or improve your website](/playbooks/b2b/build-website) |
| You have few touchpoints with companies searching for their business challenges | [Increase organic search with SEO](/playbooks/b2b/seo) |
| AI answers do not recommend your company as a relevant option, or describe it inaccurately | [Get discovered by AI search with GEO](/playbooks/b2b/geo) |
| You’re not consistently delivering expertise and case studies to stakeholders in your target industry | [Grow awareness and trust on social media](/playbooks/b2b/sns) |

Your website is the place where visitors from SEO, GEO, and social media evaluate your product or service. If your site lacks the information and conversion paths required for a purchase decision, start with the website.

## Who this guide is for

This guide is intended for businesses that sell products or services to companies through inquiries, consultations, demos, estimates, and internal evaluation processes. It is aimed at executives, business owners, and marketing personnel who provide B2B products, enterprise systems, equipment, training, and similar offerings.

Software and apps where users sign up themselves and start a free trial or paid use follow a different purchase flow and are covered in guides for software and apps. If you have both sales channels, use the guide that matches the channel you want to improve now.

## How B2B buyers move from discovery to contract

In B2B offerings, a single website visitor rarely makes the final decision. Multiple people within the company review information from different perspectives, then proceed through inquiries, sales opportunities, and internal evaluation before contracting.

The person who first gathers information, the team that will use the product, and the approver responsible for budget and risk may be different. The table below maps common stakeholders to the information each one needs.

| Stakeholders involved in evaluation | What they check to make a decision |
| ----------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| End users | How the current work can be improved and ease of use |
| Implementation owners | Whether it can be used in the target department, implementation method, required preparations, and operational arrangements |
| Managers/Approvers | Expected benefits, costs, and prioritization of implementation |
| IT/Security personnel | Data handling, permissions, integration with existing systems, and security |
| Procurement/Legal personnel | Pricing, contract terms, scope of use, termination and renewal conditions |

Not every organization involves all these roles. Confirm your company’s contract path and prepare the information required by the actual stakeholders.

Customer relationships generally follow this progression:

```text theme={null}
Build awareness with target accounts → Support problem and solution research → Generate an inquiry → Qualify the opportunity → Support internal evaluation → Sign the contract → Renew or expand the account
```

Marketing creates touchpoints with target accounts and provides the information buyers need before an inquiry. After an inquiry, use the pages they viewed, the problems they researched, and the resources they downloaded to inform the sales conversation, then provide any additional information required as the opportunity progresses.

## Measure each stage of the funnel

In B2B, looking only at the final number of contracts doesn’t reveal which stage needs improvement. Break down the process from awareness to value realization after contract and review each stage.

| Stage of relationship progression with target accounts | Actions that indicate progression to this stage | Page to check for improvement |
| ------------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Awareness | Contacts via search, AI answers, social, ads, media, events, and website visits | [Grow awareness](/playbooks/b2b/grow-awareness) |
| Leads | Views of key pages, resource requests, event sign-ups, consultations, inquiries | [Generate leads](/playbooks/b2b/generate-leads) |
| Opportunities | Qualified opportunities matching target accounts, opportunity conversion rate, reasons opportunities didn’t proceed | [Increase opportunities](/playbooks/b2b/increase-opportunities) |
| Wins | Win rate, sales cycle length, stalls at each stage, reasons for loss | [Improve win rate](/playbooks/b2b/improve-win-rate) |
| Retention and expansion | Implementation completion, outcomes, renewal rate, reasons for churn, upsells | [Expand accounts](/playbooks/b2b/expand-accounts) |

Don’t only fix the stage with the fewest numbers; check whether target accounts have the right information at the previous stage. For example, if opportunity count is low, review not only the consultation page but also whether enough leads are being generated from target accounts.

## Define your target market and next action

Before starting tactics, decide who you are targeting, what you will communicate, and what action you want them to take. The items to clarify first are:

| Item to decide | Details to specify |
| ---------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Target accounts | Industry, company size, region, and business or operational characteristics |
| Target departments/roles | End users, implementation owners, approvers |
| Business problems | Current issues and their impact on the business or operations |
| Value offered | Time, cost, quality, revenue, and risk improvements enabled by adoption |
| Evidence needed for decision | Case studies, customer results, metrics, scope of coverage, security, support |
| Next action | The initial action you want completed, such as resource request, consultation, demo booking, or inquiry |

After defining your target accounts and the next action, check which touchpoints and information are currently lacking, then follow the applicable Channel Guides to put them into practice.
